  • The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
This is the story of Dinah, daughter of Jacob and breifly mentioned in the old testament. The story is about the women and their way of life at that time. Very good story that captures your interest from the beginning.

  • The Light Bearer by Donna Gillespie
This book is set in Roman times, and it's really good. It's about a young woman from Germany who sets herself against the Roman Empire to save her people and meets a Roman senator with a plot to kill the present tyrant emperor. It's a lot more complicated than that, and it is a long book, (1012 pages), but it's awesome. I highly recommend it.

  • Pope Joan by Donna Wolfolk Cross
This novel is based on the possibility that a woman actually became Pope by portraying herself as a man. Wonderful read! You struggle with Joan throughout her life. The author also gives some information at the end to help support the theory that Joan actually did exist.

  • Russka: The Novel of Russia by Edward Rutherford
Actually covers 3 or 4 of the categories as it follows the development of an area in Russia and three families that lived there from A.D. 180 to present. Lots of stuff on history of fashion, economics, politics etc. Similar to Stonehenge which does the same for an area in England.

  • The Saxon Shore by Jack Whyte
This is the final (I think) book in a series called the Camulod Chronicles. I happened to pick this one up first at the airport but I love it. A mix of fiction and history set in the time frame of mythical Camelot & Merlyn and King Arthur as a baby and young boy. Great read.

  • Child of the Morning by Pauline Gedge
Story of Hatshetsput, female Pharaoh. I had a hard time getting into it, but after the second chapter I couldn't put it down. It isn't published in regular paperback, but is definately worth the extra price.

  • Raptor Red by Robert T. Bakker
This is the story of a Raptor and her sister, who try to survive during the last period of the Dinosuars. They live to hunt and for each other.

  • Stonehenge by Bernard Cornwell
About three brothers, Saban, Camaban and Lengar. These are the sons of Hengall, Cheif of Ratharryn. This is an excellent novel about how the three brothers destroy Cathallo, a rival settlement, and each other. My favourite novel!

  • First Man In Rome by Colleen McCullough
First in a gripping series of republican Rome leading up to the ascent of Julius Ceasar. Well-researched history and fascinating characters woven together in an interesting story. Unput-downable!

This book explains the general path taken in most stories told today and throughout history. A general compartive book between mythology and the world religions. Also has been citied to be an influence on George Lucas in his writtings of Star Wars, Willow and his other stories...

  • White Mare's Daughter by Judith Tarr
This book is about Sarama, a young priestess who is a servent to Horse Goddess, and her twin brother Angi, who is heir to their father who is king of their tribe. This is a very interesting story of two different cultures. This book and its prequel Lady of Horses are the best books that I have found since I discovered the Earth's Children Series with Valley of the Horses.

  • The Forest House by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Prequil to Bradley's Arthur Storys (Mists of Avalon) Takes place at the end of the Roman Brittania Period. Details the life in the Goddess/Druid culture through the life of Eilan, an acolyte priestess of the Goddess. Interesting similarities between the Zeladonia and the cult of the Goddess thousands of year later.

  • The Horse Goddess by Morgan Llywellyn
This story is set in Hallsatt, in the Austrian Alps, where the first Celtic settlement was discovered. It is the story of Epona, later to become the horse goddess of the Celts, but first to overcome her own struggles. Involves a love story and a clash of cultures with the Scythian, Kasack, and a shapechanger druid who persues her across Europe. I believe that anyone who loved Ayla will love Epona.

  • The Kin: Po's Story by Peter Dickinson
Although written for children, (Start them young!) this is a fabulous book about an early tribe set in Africa. I truly recommend it for both young and old(er). Look for other books by this author about the Kin!
