Chapter Summary of The Mammoth Hunters

1. Meet Lion Camp of the Mamutoi.
2. Jondalar and Ayla given space at the Mammoth Hearth. Ayla meets Mamut with Clan woman kneeling by man.
3. Ayla tells her story. Begins to teach Rydag and others hand signs.
4. Jondalar feeling jealous. Ayla dreams of two sons fighting.
5. More hand signs are taught. Ayla tells about Durc and being medicine woman. Tells of Clan status structure to Mamut, who then explains concept of Bride Price.
6. Ayla saves young girl, Nuvie, from choking. Spear throwing contest suggested but word comes of bison herd nearby. Horse used to scout herd.
7. Build gate at canyon entrance. Herd chased by Ayla on horse.
8. Horse carries extra meat back to camp. Jondalar tells of meeting Brecie at Willow camp. Spear throwing contest held.
9. Ayla demonstrates use of sling. Jondalar and Ranec compete while grinding grain. Ayla attracts birds with whistle.
10. Wymez shares secret of heating flint to make it easier to work. Ranec shows Ayla his ivory carvings.
11. Ayla hears music for the first time. She drinks too much, then joins Mamut in search. He tells her of cave lion dream that Ayla confirms as story of Baby.
12. Rydag saved from death by medicine. Mamut tells his story of being healed by Uba.
13. Talut invites Jondalar and Ayla to become Mamutoi. Ayla accepts but Frebec objects.
14. Much disscussion in camp. Ayla demonstrates fire making. Frebec drops objection. Ayla and Jondalar travel back to Valley for supplies.
15. Jondalar tells Ayla of life at home and of problems involving Zolena and Ladroman. They pay a final visit to Thonolan's grave. Ayla begins training Racer.
16. Travelling back to the Mamutoi, their tent was buried under snow, They learn about building Mamutoi structures. First examination of Fralie in the sweatbath.
17. Adoption Ceremony. Mamut claims her as a daughter of the Mammoth Hearth, rather than the Lion Hearth.
18. Exchanges of gifts. Search with Mamut.
19. Ranec asks Ayla to his bed. Talk with Mamut about Clan ways and the signal of the Others.
20. Jondalar grows more aloof. Deegie and Ayla make red leather. Mamut tells Rydag about living with the Clan. Then he learns Ayla has the root for the Ceremony.
21. Ayla plays game with Crozie. Wins knowledge of making white leather. Mamut begins training her about spirits. Jondalar gets idea about halter for Racer. Ayla invents needle.
22. Spring coming. Ayla finds wolf puppy.
23. Jondalar moves to cooking hearth. Frebec asks for more space.
24. Ayla agrees to the root ceremony.
25. Fralie has baby, with Ayla's help. Ranec wants to join with Ayla. She agrees to share his bed.
26. First ride on Racer. Jondalar's jealously grows.
27. Ayla agrees to join with Ranec.
28. Ceremony to name Fralie's daughter, Ranec and Ayla Promise and then the Root Ceremony.
29. Ludeg visits Lion Camp with news of a change in Summer Meeting to Wolf Camp. Also illness in Sungaea Camp. They leave for the Summer Meeting.
30. Stopover at Sungaea Camp then to Mammoth Camp.
31. Arrive at Wolf Camp.
32. Ayla meets many people.
33. Many offers are made to adopt or join with Ayla. Her life with the Clan is told. Frebec and Jondalar support her and then the entire Lion Camp.
34. Baby visits Summer Meeting.
35. Mammoth hunt.
36. A volcano is seen in the distance. Wolf comes to the hunting camp for Ayla. Burial Ceremony for Rydag.
37. Jondalar and Ayla leave camp.
