  1. Ayla travels to the Valley of Horses.
  1. Jondalar left Marona, who was to be mate. Meet the Losadunai and Laduni, the leader, and his daughter, Filonia. They are told the Sarmunai live downstream and North. Problems caused by Charoli, from Tomasi's cave, bothering flatheads.
  1. Finds cave in valley and decides to store food for the winter.
  1. Hadumai. Old woman, Haduma, had 16 children. Tamen is Haduma's grandson and Noria's grandfather. Noria First Rites ceremony.
  1. Dug pit to kill horse. Saved filly.
  1. Came to the Sister River and crossed. Thonolan injured and needs help.
  1. Name for filly. Made fire with stones.
  1. Sharamudoi. Dolando, Roshario, Shamud and Jetamio come to the rescue.
  1. Spring is coming. First horse ride.
  2. Horse pulls loads and helps in hunts. Finds Baby.
  1. Stories about the Mamutoi from Tholie. Shamud's predictions for Jondalar.
  2. Mating of Thonolan with Jetamio.
  1. Summer work gathering food for winter.
  2. Baby grows. Whinney leaves.
  1. Sturgeon carries Jondalar down river. Jetamio lost baby.
  1. Ride on Baby. Whinney returns. Snow starting.
  1. Jetamio dies and brothers decide to leave.
  2. Brothers begin to travel East. They are rescued from water by Brecie of the Mamutoi, Willow Camp.
  1. Spring in the Valley. Ayla finds Jondalar. Whinney has foal.
  2. Begin speech lessons.
  3. Jondalar begins walking.
  4. Real communications about Ayla and her story. Her real mother comes to her in a dream.
  5. Jondalar rides Whinney first time. He realizes that people of the Clan are Flatheads.
  6. They have discussions about the Clan.
  7. They share knowledge about working with stone. Ayla tells about Clan religion and rituals.
  8. Ayla shows counting procedure. Jondalar realizes she has been in valley 3 years and she is now 17 yrs old. He tells her about short spears that can be thrown.
  9. Both work together to invent a spear thrower, and many days are spent in practice. Hunt for bison.
  10. Baby returns for visit. First Rites for Ayla.
  11. They travel to Thonolan's grave.
